Ever thought of starting a small business but didn’t quite know how best to go about it? Business start-up questions on your mind may include: What type of small business to start?
What types of services to offer?
What types of products to sell?
What location is best? And so on.

This short piece discusses the basic qualities you need to help you start and build a small business that makes you money and keeps you happy. Please read on.

The 4 Key Qualities You Need

1) Your Gift and Talent
Like everyone else, you have God given gifts or talents. All you need do is discover them! How? Recall you childhood days and the types of creative and playful activities you used to enjoy. Recall your early school days and the subjects that you enjoyed and excelled in. Recall your childhood years and the types of personalities you aspired to be like – your role models. Review all these and you will discover your gifts and talents. Your gifts and talents point to your Mount Everest - do not burry them!

2) Your Knowledge
You are knowledgeable if you have ever passed through any form of formal or informal education, study or apprentice; including the Igbo Business Model known as the Oga and nwaBoy system. You need this knowledge to build your own business.

3) Your Expertise
You have expertise if during your broad based education or knowledge acquisition, you also zoomed in to a narrower but special area of knowledge related to your chosen study. For example, after learning general garment making, you then specialised on ladies dresses.

4) Your Experience
You have experience if you have ever put your talent, your knowledge and your expertise to productive use, either for yourself or a boss; and for which you were paid or rewarded.

Now that you got talent, you got knowledge, you got expertise, and you got experience, what next? Follow these steps below to build a business that makes you money and keeps you happy:

Step 1: Build your business around your personal interests - the type of environment you like, the type of people you love to be with, and any special things that make you happy.

Step 2: Decide whom you want to serve with your business. In other words, who are your target customers and clients? Or what is your demography? Where are they, and how will you reach them?

Step 3: What are the problems that this group have and desperately need solutions to, that you can help them solve using your business? How will you deliver these solutions?

Step 4: Figure out how to make your target customers become aware of you and your business. "If you don’t say here I am, no one will know there you are." You need to Market and Publicize your business so as to convince and encourage your customers to buy from you.

Step 5: Decide on the appropriate price to charge for your products and services such that your clients and customers are happy and willing to pay; as you smile to the bank. And you are good to go!
